Daily Movement and Rehearsal Procedures

CLASSROOM ENTRANCE PROCEDURES

  • USE OF TRAVEL TIME: Socialize and go to the bathroom on the way to class. Once you are in class you have no need to leave unless it’s an absolute emergency.
  • ENTERING THE CLASSROOM: Enter the room from the doors at the bottom of the auditorium, get your instruments and go directly to your assigned seat with your instrument, music folder and pencil. Avoid placing materials in your seat and then walking away. This is when accidents occur. Have your instrument and music in your possession at all times during transition. Leave cases in the assigned location- not on stage.

CLASSROOM ACTIVITES

  • MUSIC THEORY: We will do regular lessons in music theory (music reading). We will do this part of class after the “Folder and Pencil Check” and before playing rehearsal.
  • FULL REHEARSALS: 80% of our class time will be spent in large group rehearsal. This part of rehearsal involves 50-75 individuals working together to do the exact same things at the exact same times. Silence is required in rehearsal and there are no exceptions to that rule. Your attention and interest in what is happening in the rehearsal will determine the success of our group day to day, at concerts, and at contest.
  • MASTERCLASS DAY: Will be 12 Thursdays in the Fall and 16 Thursdays in the Spring. Detailed information about locations and teachers for this day will be given separate of the handbook. It is imperative that students be at school on Thursday’s and that we are on our best behavior when we are split up and having sectionals all across the campus.

CLASSROOM EXIT PROCEDURES

  • CLEANUP: Pickup any material (paper, reeds, trash, etc.) that is in your area. Nothing can be left in your area except your chair and stand.
  • PLACEMENT OF CHAIRS AND STANDS: Place chairs and stands back in the organized semi circles where they were found. If this cannot be achieved then we will need to put away all chairs and stands each day.
  • ORGANIZATION OF THE PERCUSSION SECTION: All parts of the percussion section must be placed back in the correct drawers in the cabinet.
  • LOW BRASS: Please take note to put your instruments and mouthpiece back in the correct order. Any random place on the wall will not do.
  • PUTTING ALL OTHER INTRUMENTS AWAY:  All instruments have an assigned location; wall, chair or cubby. Instruments left in the auditorium chairs or floor will be placed in my office or in Mrs. Bradley’s office in the case of repeat offenders.
  • I WILL COME TO YOUR ACADEMIC CLASS AND PULL YOU OUT TO COME BACK IF THE BANDROOM IF NOT LEFT THE WAY YOU FOUND IT!

INSTRUMENT AND MUSIC STORAGE

  • Folders are to be stored in your bags and your personal lockers at all times rather than stored in the auditorium. You are responsible for keeping your folder. Only students with cubbies can leave folders in the bandroom.
  • Small woodwinds are stored in personal student lockers each day.
  • Large Woodwinds and Brass are stored in your assigned wall hanger, cubbies, or section of the auditorium at all times. Read the Charts and Put them in their assigned locations.

ABSOLUTE RULES

  1. Refrain from having conversations during rehearsal without permission.
  2. Ask “we” questions in band rather than “I” questions.
  3. Band / musical questions during class only / Non-band questions after class
  4. Play instruments only when you are asked to and stop playing when you are asked to.
  5. The only food or drink allowed during class is non-flavored water from a bottle.
  6. Only percussionists are allowed to play percussion equipment.
  7. Keep your area clean during class and pick up all materials before you leave.
  8. GUM is not allowed at school. It is a major offense of the worse caliber in the band room. It sticks to the floor, the sugar is bad for instruments and it is disgusting.
