Driver's Ed Process
In order to obtain a driver’s license before the age of 18, the state of North Carolina requires that students successfully complete thirty (30) hours of classroom instruction followed by six (6) hours of behind-the-wheel training.
Grades: Students are required to attend 30 hours of class as well as complete and turn in all assignments, quizzes and final exam. Students will not pass the course until all work is completed and turned in via Google Classroom.
Dropping Course: If you drop the course or fail the course, it may be 6 months before you are allowed to take the course again. No refunds will be given.
North Carolina State Law requires students to attend 30 hours of class. Students may only miss one day of class. Attendance issues/emergencies should be discussed with the Driver’s Education instructor for make-up time and work. We offer one (1) make up day at the end of each 30 hour class session.
CLASSROOM PORTION (30 hours)
- Payment ($65) covers the cost of classroom and behind the wheel instruction.
- Students successfully complete the classroom portion by meeting attendance and grading standards.
BEHIND THE WHEEL PORTION (12 hours total; 6 driving; 6 observing)
- Students who successfully complete the classroom portion are placed in order of age from oldest to youngest for that class and their forms are distributed to individual instructors.
- Students will be called to drive in order of age as is reasonably possible. Please understand that the order may fluctuate due to scheduling conflicts and contact issues.
- Schedules for driving are not made multiple weeks in advance due to those factors above.
- Parents will be contacted to schedule driving a week or so in advance. **If the student cannot drive on the dates being offered, please schedule a future date at the time of the contact.
- Please do not contact Mr. Collins about a specific date of driving as he does not schedule for the other instructors.
- However, if you feel as though other students who are much younger are driving and your student has not been called, please contact Mr. Collins to ensure there is not a contact issue or other issue causing a potential delay.
