Classroom Policies and Procedures

Attendance

Coming to class daily is the best way to make sure that you stay on top of your learning.  Somedays we will work on things that simply cannot be done outside of class (group work, tests, quizzes etc.)  It is imperative that any work missed during an absence is made up within the 5 day period as per school board rules.  Additionally, if you are aware that you will be absent ahead of time, it is best practice to let me know ahead of time.  This will allow me to possibly give you work to complete while you are out.  Remember if you are going out of town, you need to complete a form from the office to get this approved BEFORE you leave.

Leaving Early

Please be very mindful about leaving early.  If you have orthodontist appointments, etc, try to make them so you miss different classes each time.  The last two periods of the day are just as important as the first two.

You will have homework.   ELA requires you to read outside of class so that we can do the hard work inside of class. You will also be asked to practice the grammatical skills we are learning in class.  I understand that many students have activities outside of school. To respect student engagements, I try to limit the homework to no more than 1 hour a night. I ask that you also respect my time as well by turning it in promptly.  Homework is to be graded using the 8th Grade Scoring Rubric (see attached rubric for questions or concerns.)  Please note that homework is due the day it is due.  If your homework is late,  it is docked 10 points per day as per the rubric.  Absences do not contribute to the docking of points.

Absent Work Policy

Homework due the day you are absent needs to be turned in on the day you return. It will be considered late if it is not turned in the day you return.

Homework assigned the day you are absent will have one day for every day you are absent to be turned in. For example, if you were absent for two days, you have two days from the day you return to make up your missing work.

Absences due to band lessons or any other school activity still count as absences! You are still responsible for the work you miss in the same way you would be responsible for the work if you were absent from school.

I will not continuously ask you for your absent work – you need to take responsibility! Absent work will be located in the hanging folders at the back of  my classroom.  It is up to you to pick up the missing work from that folder on the day you return.
