Davidson County Schools has a Middle School Battle of the Books competition every spring. Central Davidson Middle School is an active participant in this competition. To be a part of the Battle of the Books team, students will pick up an information sheet from the Media Center at the beginning of September. Students will be required to take an author/book test at the end of the month and must make a minimum of 80% on the test. Students who complete this first task will then move on to the second part of the application process, wherein they will read five books selected from the Battle of the Books list. At the beginning of November, students will take a multiple-choice question test (questions are worded like those asked in competition) on those five books, and their two test scores will be averaged together. The six highest-scoring students will be placed on the CDMS Battle of the Books team. While up to twelve students may be on a team, it is at the discretion of the school's media coordinator as to how many students she wants on the team.
The CDMS Battle of the Books team will meet regularly to discuss books and prepare for the competition. Students will meet twice a month during Spartan Time on Fridays through December and then throughout the week until the event.
NEW FOR 2025-2026
Davidson County Schools' middle school media coordinators have elected to work with a shortened list of books. Instead of the given twenty, Davidson County Schools will focus on fourteen books on the list. It is important to remember that the team that wins the county competition must be prepared to know the details of all twenty books at the regional competition. Students who are determined to win the county competition should make sure they also read the other six books that are not on the shortened list provided by the county.
Students who want to participate in Battle of the Books MUST have a parent/guardian fill out the Google Form giving them permission to be on the team and approve of all/select books on the list to be read.
