General Music

Course Description:

This is a one semester course where students will learn fundamental concepts of the elements of music including pitch, rhythm, melody, harmony, form, texture, timbre and dynamics.  There will be an emphasis on music theory such as reading and writing music and classroom instrument performances such as bucket drums and keyboards. Students will also learn about music history, musical styles, and composers.  There will also be a music and technology component utilizing chromebooks.  Students will have the opportunity to practice, perform, create, analyze and reflect in each musical unit.  While this is not a performance based class such as band or chorus, student participation, projects and playing tests will play a significant role in a student’s grade.  All lessons and units will follow the NC Essential Standards for Music and the National Music Standards.

Classroom Expectations:

I hold high expectations of my students and expect an environment of kindness, respect and participation.  We are in school to learn, and I want all students to experience a safe and positive learning environment.

  • Be respectful to the teacher and fellow classmates.
  • Arrive on time and prepared for each class.
  • Participate actively and positively in all activities.
  • Take care of class materials, instruments and equipment.
  • Communicate any concerns or conflicts to the teacher.

For students who choose not to follow expectations:

  • Students will be given a verbal warning.
  • If they are still not meeting expectations, this may result in a seat change, alternate assignment and a parent contact.
  • Office referral and a parent contact.

Grading

  • Grades will be given in three categories:

Major (50%): Classroom tests (written or performance based), Research Projects.

Minor (30%):  Music portfolio assignments and Daily Downbeats

Classwork/Homework (20%)   Participation and quick quizzes

  • Daily Downbeat will be bell ringer work everyday in your music portfolio when you enter music class. These are music related questions you will be expected to answer at the beginning of class each day.  10 Daily Downbeats (10 points each) = 1 minor grade.

  • Attendance will be taken daily and students are expected to make up any missed work from being absent from class.

  • The Davidson County Grading Scale will be used to determine the final letter grade: A = 90-100 B = 80-89 C = 70-79 D = 60-69 F = 59 and below

  • If you do not turn in classwork on time, you will be allowed to turn it in late. However, after 5 days, points will be deducted from the assignment grade for each day it is late.
